EVLA (EndoVenous Laser Ablation)

Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) is the procedure we use at bod:evolve veins to treat the larger varicose veins.  The procedure uses a laser to heat up the inside of the vein causing it to collapse permanently.  Another way of saying it is a laser is used inside the vein (endovenous) to get rid of the vein (ablation).

EVLA, is also referred to as EVLT, EVO, ELVeS, or CTEV.  Another treatment option you will read about is the VNUS Closure, and the VNUS ClosureFAST.  These procedures are similar to laser treatment.  In the VNUS procedures radio frequency is used to heat the inside of the vein.  The laser procedure has some advantages over the radio frequency procedures and is the most commonly used vein treatment procedure worldwide and in the United States.

These treatments are performed in the bod:evolve facilities using local anesthesia.  Your leg is cleansed, and sterile surgical drapes are placed around your leg.  Then a tiny needle is used to numb the skin.  When your skin is numb a larger needle is inserted into the vein.  The laser fiber, a tiny fiber optic device, is placed inside the vein.  More local anesthetic is injected around the vein.  The laser energy travels through the fiber to the tip and heats the inside of the vein while the laser fiber is removed.  At the end of the procedure your vein has collapsed.  We put a tight stocking on your leg, and you are able to walk out of the office and return to almost normal activity the same day.  The procedure is so easy that the worst part is the local anesthetic injection and wearing the compression stockings!  You will immediately see a difference in the size of your varicose veins.  As soon as the soreness of the procedure wears off (about two weeks) the discomfort your veins were causing will be improved or completely gone.
